Its location on the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture: salt cod and grilled sardines are national dishes, the Algarve's beaches are a major destination and much of the nation’s architecture dates to the 1500s–1800s, when Portugal had a powerful maritime empire. In terms of food there is an emphasis on fish, meat, olive oil, tomato and spices, featuring hearty soups, homemade bread and cheeses, as well as unexpected combinations of meat and shellfish. Because Portugal’s wine culture developed in relative isolation, many grape varieties do not grow anywhere else in the world. If you don’t recognize the grape variety on a Portuguese wine label, it’s a good thing. There are over 250 indigenous varieties and a few imports that have adapted well to the Portuguese landscape (i.e., they are delicious). To many wine experts, Portugal is the last frontier of wine in Western Europe; there is still so much to be tasted and explored. Drag Brunch is BACK! Join us May 26 for our Power Ballad Brunch featuring performances from Sasha Tease, Melody Bijou & Kamilla Flores. Doors open at 10:30am and the show starts at 11am. Tapas are essentially small plates of food served with a drink. The tapas culture of Spain has even spread to other countries as a popular way to put a twist on a classic tradition. There are a lot of different stories surrounding the origin of tapas. Some people say the creation of tapas was in the 13th century by King Alfonso X of Castile. While recovering from an illness, the King could only eat and drink in small amounts. After regaining his health, he made a decree that all drinks should be served with something to eat. Traditional Southeast Asian recipes incorporate the organizing principals of Chinese cuisine and the complex flavors derived from Indian herbs and spices.
